Reclaiming the Narrative – Australian South Sea Islander history, heritage and culture
Today the Australia South Sea Islander identity, history, heritage and culture still remains unknown to the wider community. In 2019, it will mark the 25 years since the Australian Government
recognised Australian South Sea Islanders as a distinct cultural group. How far have we come?
This session will explore how Australian South Sea Islander artists and curators are working to reclaim the historical narrative and creating awareness about the Australian South Sea Islander identity.

FIDAF is an organization comprised of a network of folk dance festivals, dance directors, and folk leaders from around the world with the ultimate goal of creating a platform to celebrate each other’s unique cultures while embracing the diversity
Abstract:
Creating a global platform through dance to share and preserve our unique cultural expressions meanwhile embracing the diversity of the global artistic community
In order to sustain our cultural heritage, independent performers, contemporary and traditional dance schools, organisations and professional companies from around the Pacific are engaging in international networks such as the Federation of International Dance Festivals, that focus on sharing knowledge, creating international platforms and provide an important network for heritage dance.

Culture, History and Language in the College of Asia and the Pacific and a Fellow of the
Academy of the Social Sciences in Australia. She is an historical anthropologist who has written
extensively on gender in the Pacific, maternity and sexuality, cinema and art
